چکیده

This paper presents a novel concept of mobility that provides dynamic stability and rapid locomotion. The concept, called Gyrover, is a single-wheel, gyroscopically stabilized robot that can be considered as a single wheel actuated by a spinning flywheel attached to a two-link manipulator at the wheel bearing and drive motor. The spinning flywheel acts as a gyroscope to stabilize the robot, and it can be tilted to achieve steering. This configuration conveys significant advantages over multiwheel, statically stable vehicles, including good dynamic stability and insensitivity to attitude disturbances, high maneuverability, low rolling resistance, ability to recover from falls, and amphibious capability. In this paper, the authors present the robot concept, three prototypes of the design, and system implementation. The authors study the robot’s nonholonomic constraints and the stabilizing effect of the flywheel on the system through simulation and

Dynamic Simulation Tool Development for Planetary Rovers

A dynamic computer simulator was developed to study planetary rover mobility. The simulator was validated for step-obstacle negotiation by comparing simulation results with a quasi-static analysis of a rockerbogie suspension. In addition, sample rover wheels were constructed and experiments were carried out on a single-wheel testbed to help validate the simulator. It is concluded that to fully ...

Modeling and Validation of Mobility Characteristics of the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover

This paper describes recent work toward developing a terramechanics-based modeling and validation infrastructure for characterizing the Curiosity rovers mobility properties on the Mars surface. The resulting simulation tool, ARTEMIS (Adams-based Rover Terramechanics and Mobility Interaction Simulator), is composed of a MSC-Adams dynamic rover model, a library of terramechanics subroutines, and ...

Field validation of Nomad's robotic locomotion

During June and July of 1997, a mobile robot named Nomad traversed 223km in the Atacama Desert of southern Chile via transcontinental teleoperation. This unprecedented accomplishment is primarily attributed to Nomad’s innovative locomotion design which features four-wheel/all-wheel drive locomotion, a reconfigurable chassis, electronically coordinated steering, pivot-arm suspension, and body mo...

Model-based Control of a fast Rover over natural Terrain

A model-based control for fast autonomous four-wheel mobile robots on soft soils is developed. This control strategy takes into account slip and skid effects to extend the mobility over planar granular soils. Each wheel is independently actuated by an electric motor. The overall objective is to follow a path roughly at relatively high speed. Some results obtained in dynamic simulation are prese...

Numerical Comparison of Pavement Distress Due to Moving Load under Dual-wheel Tandem and Tridem Axles

Finite element method in pavement analysis is a type of mechanistic analysis that has widely been used by road and transportation engineers these days. This method is used with related programs such as ABAQUS/CAE which is one of the powerful software on this task. Modeling in this software has been developed from 2D static models to 3D dynamic models which are closer to reality due to the more ...
